Should I stay or should I go? On the day of departure to South Africa, I decided to postpone the flight in order to take care of some business. I called Geraldine to notify her and she dropped the phone, pissed off apparently. With 27 seconds, a short conversation, or should I say monologue? The next day I gave it another shot, at the point she started crying I dropped the phone. As part of the policy, saving money during calls, we don’t need to say the things we already know (I love you, for instance), we don’t cry or fight.
In South Africa cellular phone companies invented Please Call Me’s, free sms’s to trigger somebody else to make the call. In the past I’ve received well over a 1000 of these sms’s, but I stopped reacting long ago, at a certain stage I even blocked them, fed up. In SA the majority hasn’t the cash to make calls, but they do have a phone. A smart invention of Vodacom and the lot, to make money over the heads of people that don’t have money. I can’t remember when I received the last pcm from Geraldine, a miracle…

I always hated rss readers, I like to read the newspaper every morning, but now something was happening on the other side of the world which interested me very much. There was suddenly a need for a reader, I set a Google Alert as well and the news forces its way…
On the same time that the riots broke out in Alexandra, my sub page on townships in South Africa at Startpagina.nl went live. Coincidence? Brilliant, great timing and free advertising.
My vision on xenofobia? It’s plain stupid. South Africa has become a democracy, when you disagree you shouldn’t create havoc, but next time (next year?) when you need to vote again, vote a different party, but hey I’m Dutch… Already 7 days after the start of the riots the SAIRR (South African Institute of Race Relations) made a statement on the causal factors of the violence, they probably had it lying on the shelve somewhere, useful reading material.
At home in the Tsitsikamma it was pretty quiet, why? Everybody has a job (2 big projects in the region) and the amount of foreigners in the township dropped 25% two months ago, when I left (grin).
Anyways past events will hurt South Africa’s tourism in general and towship tourism in specific. Shortly after the army was deployed, we got another booking?!? For now business is quiet, I hope Geraldine enjoys her holiday. From next month on we have people again.

Kijk babbelas in een nieuw jasje! www.babbelas.net wordt nou niet zo vaak meer gebruikt en ik weet niet of ik ooit nog eens actief ga worden. Na een paar jaar klooien heb ik toch wel 4 domeinnamen op mijn/onze naam staan, maar geen enkele website die naar behoren werkt. Plan van aanpak:

- de business website, www.cyclingonsea.net is net zo dolende als mijn business, afvoeren dus.
- voor de b&b ben ik reeds aan de slag www.ttbb.co.za en www.townshipwalk.co.za zullen gaan verwijzen naar de zelfde website.
Wat is het nut? Kosten besparen! Nog meer veranderingen? Met hoofdletters schrijven en we’ll continue in english, na enige jaren als nederlands-afrikaanse engelsman door het leven te zijn gestapt, weet ik soms niet meer of iets nou met een T of een D moet en de aanwas van nieuwe lezers snappen geen hol van de nederlandse taal.

alweer 48 uur nuchter,grr. deze 3 dagen vrij zijn een verademing. iedereen denkt dat ik druk aan het solliciteren ben, nee, ik ben een reis aant plannen. bestemming zuidelijk halfrond. wat oorlog in iraq, wat naderende crisis, geeen baan, etc… now’s the time, geen baan, geen relatie. als ik over 2 jaar nog op de bank voor de tv hang, dan zal ik er nog wel tot mijn 60ste op zitten. wereldreis, wat moet ik er doen? kweet het niet, denk alleen dat ik er mentaal sterker van wordt, zelfstandiger. morgen laatste vrije dag, camera en wereldkaart kopen, en route uitstippelen. ik dacht aan amsterdam – latijns-amerika – hawai – newzeeland – australie – zuidafrika – amsterdam, maar over de precieze vorm moet ik nog wat dubben. iets van halfjaar reizen, halfjaar nuttig werk verrichten [welfare-organisatie ofzo]. het is fijn als er een wederzijdse bevrediging is omtrent werk. zaterdag maudmars en co, eerst even met carlijn en leonard [steady boyfriend, i believe] een rondje van abbe doen.
